This past fall I taught Sound Design and Technology for the UNC Department of Dramatic Arts. This class focused a good deal on the basics of sound systems, familiarizing students with the core principles of sound systems that can be applied anywhere to any size system. In addition, while at UNC School of the Arts I taught Sound for Non-Majors and was the teaching assistant for Intro to Sound. The goal of Sound for Non-Majors was to help students who needed sound in their focus in theater to understand the basics of sound. I started with the basics of sound, covered equipment, gain structure, basic editing and computer playback. Their final project was to tell a two minute story using only sound. As a teaching assistant I had two main goals. One, to make the teachers life easier as needed. This included leading review sessions, grading tests, and helping during class demonstrations. Second, to be there for the students. Sometimes this was pretty much the same as what I did to help the teacher, other times it involved driving to the sound lab in pajamas to help them with Pro Tools.
